Ann

Playing at the Vivian Beaumont in Lincoln Center Theater.  The theatre is located at 150 West 65th street.  It runs one hour forty five minutes with one intermission.  The play closes on June 19, 2013.

The play is about Ann Richards. She was the forty fifth governor of Texas from January 15, 1991 thru January 17, 1995.  Ann was succeeded by George W. Bush.  She died on September 13, 2006 at the age of 63 from esophageal cancer.

Holland Taylor performs and wrote this one man show.

Holland won an Emmy in 1996 for her role in “The Practice”.  She was nominated for four Emmy's for her performance in Two and a Half Men (2005, 2007, 2008, and 2010).

The two act play was originally titled “Money, Marbles and Chalk” was first workshopped  in May 2010 at the Grand 1894 Opera House in Galveston, Texas.  It was later retitled Ann: An Affectionate Portrait of Ann Richards and opened in Chicago on November 16, 2011.    Before it came to Lincoln Center it played at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D. C. from December 17, 2011 to January 12, 2012.

The setting is in the school auditorium of an imaginary college in the middle  of Texas.

It opens with Ann’s  speech at the 1988 Democratic National Convention.

The scene then shifts to the commence speech Ann is giving at the college.

We become acquainted with Ann from her childhood until her untimely death.

The first part of act one tells of her life up until she becomes governor, the second part is Ann in the governor’s office.  In the second act is about her as governor and her loss of a second term.  The remainder of the play tells what happens to her until her death.

This is a witty one man er should I say one woman play.

Holland does an outstanding job as Ann.  She has captured the soul of this woman.  It was as if Ann was on the stage.

There is enough information given about Ann Richards to peak your interest and keep you wanting to know more.

This play is well worth seeing.

I went to You Tube to see what Richards was like.  Holland could be her ghost.  At least a good ghost, one you would enjoy experiencing.
