The Mystery Of Love & Sex

The Mystery of Love and Sex is playing at the Mitzi New House located at 150 West 65th Street.  It runs two hours and twenty minutes with one intermission.   The play closes on April 20, 2015.

Bathsheba Doran is the playwright.  She was nominated for the 2012 Writers Guild Award for her work on HBO series “Boardwalk Empire”.   She also wrote episodes in season two for the NBC show “Smash” and is the writer for season two of Showtime’s “Master of Sex”.

Tony Shaloub was nominated for a Tony Award for “Act One” (2014) and “Golden Boy” (2013).  He won a Prime Time Emmy Award for “Monk” (2003, 2005 and 2006).

Diane Lane was nominated for an Academy Award, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award in 2002 for “Unfaithful”.

Charlotte (Gayle Rankin) parents come to visit her in her dorm.  Her childhood friend Jonny (Mamoudou Athie) is going to the same college is there.  They have made a make shift tablet for dinner of salad and bread.   When her parents arrive Howard (Tony Shalhoub) and Lucinda (Diane Lane) are thrilled to see their daughter.  Howard is trying to discourage her from getting serious with Jonny.  Not because he is African American but because he is not Jewish.  Jonny is a Baptist.

Charlotte and Jonny are confused about their sexuality.

The story revolves around with the decisions they make on their sexual preference and everyday life.

Howard, who writes mystery books doesn’t give Jonny the interview he promised him because of  some mishap that was going on at the time. Jonny needs the interview for his final paper in a class he is taking. He writes his own interpretation of Howard, which leads to another problem later on.

Howard and Lucinda have their own problems.

This is a well written story.  I’m just giving you the basic information; I don’t want to spoil  the show for you.    It’s a modern day story worth seeing.

Beware there is full nudity of both sexes.

The set is minimal, but you don’t need more.

The cast is great.

Tony Shalhoub is excellent.  He gets better each time I see him.
